Carr is 79 of 109 for 753 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions in four games for the Raiders (2-2), who have lost two in a row. Carr was sidelined previous year after suffering a fractured tibula in Week 16, and Matt McGloin and Connor Cook weren't able to do enough to prevent an immediate playoff exit with a 27-14 loss to the Texans.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will miss between two and six weeks after breaking a bone in his back during a loss to the Denver Broncos.

This is a challenging time for the Raiders, who have lost two straight games after starting 2-0 and leading the National Football League in scoring.

Manuel will start Sunday's game versus the Ravens with Derek Carr (back) sidelined, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

The Raiders were shell-shocked when Carr went down with a broken leg Christmas Eve, and they did not recover, losing their final regular-season game (in Denver) and in the wild-card game (in Houston).

Oakland Raiders quarterback EJ Manuel (3) throws a pass against the Los Angeles Rams in the third quarter at Oakland Coliseum.

Carr is likely to do the same and try to play missing only one game.

But, just one quarter of the way into this special season, the Raiders, and their quarterback, are decidedly not fine.

The Raiders return home to host the Baltimore Ravens.

In theory, Carr could return after that contest with the Bolts.

Will the Raiders still be.500 at that point? Carr won't be available for at least one week and possibly not until after the bye, which is November 12.

On Sunday in Denver, Manuel entered in relief of Carr after the latter left the contest.

A little more than a week after that game, the Raiders travel to first-place Buffalo.

No matter how well it appeared Manuel played against the Broncos, is that a fate any Raiders fan trusts the backup quarterback to avoid?
