Rene Boucher was arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring U.S. Sen. It did note that Boucher and Paul have been next-door neighbors for 17 years, and said that the two, both physicians, had worked together when they were both practicing.

He was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree assault, though he could face upgraded charges due to the extent of Paul's injuries, The Washington Post reported.

Paul's office said in a statement the former Republican presidential candidate "was blindsided and the victim of an assault". "This type of injury is also accompanied by severe pain that can last weeks to months". He had trouble breathing because of the rib injury, the warrant said. "Our arresting officer will submit his completed case report and then the prosecutors will make a decision about whether to upgrade those charges". Both Capitol Police and the FBI are investigating the incident.

Baker has not returned a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

"We are working with our state and local partners to determine if there was a violation of federal law", Habich said.

Paul and Boucher live in a neighborhood in Warren County east of Bowling Green's center, in an area where large houses sit on green lots. Paul is an ophthalmologist and Boucher is a retired anesthesiologist. Baker didn't immediately clarify his statement, and a number listed for Boucher went unanswered on Monday.

"It is a pending, serious criminal matter involving state and federal authorities".

"They were as far left and right as you can be", Skaggs said.

McConnell said he plans to talk with Paul later Monday. Rand Paul with five broken ribs may have been the result of a landscaping dispute.

According to the jailer at Warren County Regional Jail, 59-year-old Rene Boucher was released on $7,500 bail Saturday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says fellow Sen. Online records state that Boucher's party affiliation is Democrat. "We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible". He previously covered Congress and national politics.
