16 die as boat capsizes in India

Reports say that 14 bodies have been recovered so far. Officials said 41 passengers, including 31 members of Ongole Wakers Club, were on the boat when it overturned. "It capsized near a curve as it approached the Pavitra Sangamam point and most of the people were trapped underneath and were killed", an Assistant Commissioner of Police said.

A total of 15 people were rescued with the help of locals. Several teams of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) were rushed to the spot to rescue people.

A total of 38 passengers and three crew members were on-board the vessel, which was operated by a private company and traveling along the Krishna river near Vijayawada on Sunday.

According to Vijayawada police, the motor boat with a three-man crew was ferrying 38 passengers from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam on the outskirts of Vijayawada for a religious ceremony on Karthika Masam.

Rajappa also announced an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh to each of the families of the deceased.

Another 20 people swam to safety or were rescued by villagers in the Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh state Home Minister N. Chinnarajappa said.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, the Chief Minister, Opposition leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and film actor and Jana Sena party president Pawan Kalyan were among who expressed their shock and grief over the incident.
