It was since widely speculated that Patrick may perhaps be retiring from her racing career since her chances of finding another full-time ride in the Cup Series were slim.

Patrick's retirement is another major change in the landscape of NASCAR following this season.

I know I always said I'd never go back to Indy, and I was always being honest. "But it made me think about things, and so I'm excited about the next phase, trust me".

She has not yet announced which team she will drive for, but did say that she does not anticipate a return to NASCAR. "I'm going to do the Daytona 500 next year and the Indy 500 ... Let's end it with the Indy 500, '" she said.

This is a developing story and will be updated. However, she couldn't shake the idea of ending it back at one of the races that catapulted her to fame: the Indianapolis 500.

"I feel like this is where my life should be headed, and sometimes we just get kind of nudged there", she began. My plan is to be at Indy, and then I'm done.

Stewart also credits Patrick for helping him expand the Stewart-Haas Racing team to four cars. I feel like there's a lot out of your control as a driver, and that's frustrating. She's also the only woman to have ever led laps in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500-19 of those laps were as a rookie in IndyCar. But I definitely was faced with situations at the beginning of the year that I'd never faced before. Her contract concludes after the season finale on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"It's super competitive", Patrick said. I tried every approach, and, really, all that ended up happening was I lost my crew chief the first time around with Tony Gibson.

Patrick spent seven years as an IndyCar driver before making the move to NASCAR in 2012. It made me think about things. "I don't care if your remember me as a girl".
