"And we're in the awful situation where our politics are so polarized that people in Alabama would quite forthrightly vote for a man accused multiple times of sexual assault than a Democrat because they feel like our politics are such high stakes".

Trump's reactions fit within his broader political instincts: stay on the attack, always, even in cases where he is vulnerable himself.

What do you think about the differences between sexual abuse, harassment, and assault allegations and the differences between Democrats and Republicans?

Trump went on television and flatly read an apology for his words, then zealously shifted into offense.

As the storm of allegations has swirled, Trump, who himself has faced more than a dozen allegations of sexual misconduct, had largely avoided comment. Trump has denied the assault allegations and accused the women of lying.

He failed to follow through, but continues to contend that all of the women who have accused him are liars, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said last month. "Look at the contrast between Al Franken, accepting responsibility, apologising, and Roy Moore and Donald Trump who have done neither", she told New Yorks WABC radio station.

She bluntly turned down a suggestion that Trump's actions be examined, as Franken's will be by the Senate Ethics Committee. Maher then suggested an alternate #MeToo campaign that differentiates between the likes of Franken and Moore, adding, "I know the difference between someone who behaved like a high schooler and someone who targeted high schoolers".

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the allegations against him as fake news, most recently telling reporters on October 16: "It's just fake".

"The president believes we can not allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person's life".

Trump seemed to revel in the news with a favorite standby: a tweet and a nickname.

Mocking Franken's name in a misspelling, the president wrote: "The Al Frankenstien picture is really bad, speaks a thousand words". Trump tweeted, misspelling Frankenstein.

Former model and performer Leeann Tweeden told the world Thursday of how Franken allegedly gave her an unwanted kiss and groped her while she slept on a flight back from a USO tour in 2006.

The reference to Stahl was to a NY magazine article in which Franken talked about a "Saturday Night Live" skit. The reference was included in a 1995 NY magazine article.

Trump said during his recently concluded Asia trip that he would have more to say about Moore when he returned home.

Earlier on Thursday, the White House said Trump believes the allegations against Moore were "very troubling and should be taken seriously".

"However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside", she said.
