Unlike their one-sided round robin match earlier in the week, where Goffin managed to win all of two games, this time their encounter went to a third set and Dimitrov needed five match points to wrap up the proceedings 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

In the end, though, Grigor Dimitrov has shown that he might yet make good on that obvious promise, claiming the biggest prize of his career at the age of 26.

Goffin, who became just the sixth player in history to beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same tournament, forced his opponent back in the opening game and broke in stunning fashion with a scintillating forehand victor. I'm in the right place, and I deserve to be here in this tournament.

After three consecutive breaks, the Belgian seventh seed was the first to hold his serve, forging ahead 3-1 and the match then settled back into a more predictable pattern. "We hope to play some more in the future".

It was one error too many from Goffin, who made 88 in the match, and almost half of them unforced. He opened the second set with fight; holding another impressive service game before breaking Federer and then holding his second service game to love.

Sunday's match could have gone either way after a nervous first set in which the players exchanged a series of breaks.

"I just can't believe it", Goffin said after the match with disbelief writ large on his face.

The Bulgarian took the second of them with an inch-perfect forehand down the line to serve for a place in the final, which he secured with his fourth match point.

"There is the generation of Federer, he's nearly 10 years older than me, so we are not from the same generation".

There still seemed plenty of time for 19-time Grand Slam champion Federer to re-assert his authority but Goffin stayed cool and his moment of truth arrived at 5-4 when he stepped up to serve for the biggest win of his career.

Also, he had grabbed the ATP Finals six times in the past.

"It was a tough game [at 2-3] and I was a little bit exhausted in the third. I won the most important points, especially in the first set". "He was really solid".

Dimitrov's run to the semi-finals at the All England Club meant he cracked the top 10 for the first time. At 3-0 in the second set, Goffin was digging his heels into the game.

"Of course, one of my main goals is to win a tournament, a grand slam tournament", Dimitrov said.

The Bulgarian was tipped years ago to be the next big thing and earned the nickname "Baby Fed" because his style of play was a decent cover version of Roger Federer's greatest hits. "This has always been, again, a dream of mine".
