Rumours of the pair perhaps getting it on in a boxing ring had circled earlier this year but after the whole Mayweather vs McGregor fight was announced, they died down pretty quickly.

But finances aside, there are many more ramifications for McGregor's unnecessary stay on the sidelines, and it's clearly hurting the fight game by having by far its biggest name without a fight for so long.

The UFC lightweight champion has been out of action since winning the title in what seems like forever ago at UFC 205 in November 2016.

Just days after Malignaggi posted a statement explaining his decision to leave the Irishman's camp after just two sessions, UFC president Dana White released footage of his sparring session with McGregor.

Should McGregor decide that he does not want to fight Ferguson next, it is also possible that he could sign up for a trilogy fight with nemesis Nate Diaz.

A third bout between the two outspoken and unpredictable fighters could make tons of money and it remains an option for McGregor.

Rumours have continued to circulate about whether or not McGregor will return to boxing, however, most fans expect he will return to UFC in the near future.

Australian promoter Dean Lonergan recently teased the idea of drawing Conor McGregor to Australia.
