Terrorists attack Army convoy in J&K's Qazigund, gun battle currently underway

After attacking the army, the militants, said to be two in number, entered a private house which was surrounded immediately by the security forces.

An Army jawan and two Lashkar-e-Tayabba (LeT) cadres were killed and another soldier wounded in a militant attack and counter attack by security forces in Qazigund, the gateway into Kashmir Valley from the south, on Monday.

Sources said two civilians were hit by pellets while the third one sustained a bullet injury during the clashes. The convoy was on the way to Srinagar from Qazigund, around 66 km away from Srinagar.

"The security personnel encircled a house, where the militants had taken refuge". As the soldiers neared the hiding spot, the militants opened fire, triggering an encounter.

Locals said they heard heavy gunfire and sound of blasts.

Earlier massive clashes erupted near the gunfight site during which forces used force to disperse the protesters who were trying to disturb the operation against the militants. Soon after the attack, army along with additional reinforcement launched a cordon and search operation to nab the assailants.

Sources said a group of militants opened indiscriminate fire upon a patrolling party of the Army in Bounigam village of Qazigund area, in which three soldiers were injured.
