Parliament's winter session adjourned till 18 December

Earlier speaking in the BJP's parliamentary party executive meeting also, the prime minister stressed on maximum attendance of the MPs in both the houses, BJP MP Sharad Tripathi, who was present in the meeting, said.

This is the shortest winter session in nearly twenty years.

The Centre is expected to table 25 pending bills and 14 new ones, including a bill providing Muslim women the right to seek maintenance in case of triple talaq, during the session which began on Friday.

Any layman in the country can understand that the main reason for this year's Winter Session delay are the Gujarat Assembly Elections. "And I believe that in this Winter Session, that is beginning in 2017 and will continue in 2018, several important issues of the government, that have far reaching impact, will be brought before the Parliament", Modi said. "PM must clarify in the Parliament", he said.

Azad said his party and other Opposition leaders have given a notice under rule 267 seeking suspension of the listed business to discuss an issue which he termed as "serious".

The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till Monday following the opposition's relentless protests.

An angry Opposition led by the Congress accused PM Modi of levelling "serious charges" against Singh, former vice president Hamid Ansari and diplomats. During the meeting, prominent leaders of many opposition parties, including the Congress, NCP, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), RJD, J-K National Conference and the Left parties met in the chamber of the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and discussed key issues to be raised in Parliament.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel on Friday said the current Winter Session of Parliament is not the only one which has been shortened or rescheduled.

"There should be a good debate, there should be a positive debate, and the debates should take place with innovative suggestions only then the time of the Parliament will be properly utilized for the benefit of the country", Modi told the media ahead of the session.
