Roberto Firmino scored the leveller as Liverpool survived an incredible Arsenal fightback in a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Emirates Friday night.

Fourth placed Liverpool remain one point above fifth placed Arsenal after a Christmas cracker that underlined the qualities and problems with two teams who harboured title ambitions in August, but now trail way behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

As Arsenal lost the ball in the midfield with as many as eight of their outfield players in the opposition half, James Milner sprayed it onto the path of Mohamed Salah, who held off Laurent Koscielny for just long enough to set up Philippe Coutinho. We played too deep.

If it does not, would you be surprised - it is still Arsenal and Liverpool, sides that know how to attack but are clueless in the defensive arts.

"And then in this unusual game, everybody probably thought first, "this is Liverpool's night" and then after these five minutes everybody thought "now it's Arsenal's night". However, they found themselves 3-2 down after Alexis Sánchez, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Özil hit back for the hosts in the space of five frenzied minutes.

"They've scored three away from home at Arsenal", Carragher told Sky Sports. The equalizer from Xhaka was as much due to an optimistic yet blistering strike from the Swiss as it was due to Simon Mignolet's erroneous shotstopping. "The draw feels really not good, but that's good because we should have won like in all the other draws we have".

But Liverpool being Liverpool - and Arsenal being Arsenal - there were always going to be more goals.

"Ask any team how often they have outplayed us - pass this, pass that, get in the box and score; that doesn't happen against us".

The Merseyside club come into the game on the back of an emphatic 4-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend, and will be hoping to maintain this level of performance on Friday night.
