A woman and two kids were shot and killed on Monday, Christmas Day, during an alleged domestic violence incident at an apartment in Phoenix, officials said.

The Phoenix Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at an upscale apartment complex just before 4pm on Monday, arriving to find a woman dead in the parking lot.

The suspect barricaded himself inside one of the apartment complexes, and after a few hours, began shooting at the officers, ABC 15 Arizona reported. He says the suspect was pronounced dead Sunday night after being taken to a Phoenix hospital.

The suspect then told police that he'd shot two children inside the home, officers said.

Ross, who was visiting Phoenix for the holidays, was not hurt, Howard said.

Police engaged in an nearly seven-hour standoff with the suspect during which an officer was injured but was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition, New York Daily News reported. The identities of the woman and children are being withheld pending family notification.

The area will be restricted for several more hours while detectives investigate.

Several residents waited in parked cars across the street for hours until police resolved the incident. "It's eerie. I feel bad for whoever is going through this", said Kristen Alexander, a resident at the complex. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
