Powerball, Mega Millions have $783M up for grabs to start new year

The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was $656 million for the March 30, 2012 drawing.

The lump-sum cash options are now $278.3 million for Powerball and $215 for Mega Millions.

The Mega Millions jackpot now stands at an estimated $361 million, with a cash option of $225.9 million, for Tuesday night's drawing.

Make good on a New Year's resolution to make more money in 2018 by buying a ticket for the Mega Millions or Powerball lotteries, both of which have hefty jackpots this week.

"Whenever the jackpots reach totals above $300 million we start to notice more and more people coming in to get tickets", said Joanie Maloney, assistant manager at Stogie's. No ticket won all six numbers in Friday night's drawing.

Between the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots, $801 million is up for grabs. With slightly better odds than the Powerball game, it's rare that months pass without someone winning a Mega Millions jackpot.

The chance of winning either game is low, and the chance of winning both is extremely low - 1 in 88 quadrillion. Multipliers are available in all states offering the games except California, which bans the type of fixed prize payouts awarded by multipliers. Mega millions made a change in October, giving you more numbers to choose from - and making it harder to win.
