It said in its November meeting minutes: 'The committee agreed that if a change in approach were to be considered, switching vaccination of the 75 years and upwards age group to adjuvanted vaccine would be the first priority, given the un-adjuvanted inactivated vaccine showed no significant effectiveness in this group'.

According to ODH, the start of this year's flu season in OH appears to be similar to the start of the 2014-2015 fly season when there were 50 more hospitalizations on the last week of the year.

Health experts say the influenza season in the United States is proving to be more severe than usual, with about twice the number of people reporting flu-like illness to their doctors compared with the same time previous year.

There's no requirement for reporting adult flu-associated deaths to public health agencies.

"We're above average (in flu cases) so far and earlier than usual", said Dr. Mark Rasnake, an infectious disease physician at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, on Friday.

There have been no reported flu-associated pediatric deaths in OH for the 2017-18 flu season, according to ODH.

"Most states are seeing an increase right now, and we are no exception", Buchanan said.

Parents of children aged two and three are also strongly recommended to make sure that their children have had their free flu vaccination.

Department of Health spokesman Bill Christian told media that two deaths were recorded in East Tennessee and one was recorded in Middle Tennessee.

"The nasal spray vaccine previous year reduced children's risk of flu by 65% meaning they were less likely to spread it to relatives and others they come into close with".

The state of OH has been experiencing widespread flu activity since mid-December, about a month earlier than last flu season.

"Washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and get your flu shot", Maynard said.

For more information about the vaccine, contact the health department at 648-5747. However, if someone vaccinated gets the flu their symptoms are likely to be less severe than someone who is unvaccinated. "Getting it during the holiday season is even worse", said Chakravarty.
