McCartney, a three year veteran of the sheriff's office and a Navy veteran, was shot Sunday evening while responding to a burglary in Frederickson, Washington.
It was not immediately known who shot one of the suspects, or whether the deputy managed to return fire. They alerted deputies, and McCartney arrived about six minutes later.
McCartney was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he died.
"This man lived a life of duty and obligation and sacrifice", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor.
The fugitive is described to be mixed race or white male, tall, thin with a large pointy nose, curly dark hair in a ponytail, and pock marks on the right side of his face.More news: How to Watch Saints vs. Panthers
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department posted on its Facebook page early Monday that the deputy was shot just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday during a foot chase after responding to a 911 call. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie.
The suspect, who authorities described as armed and unsafe, was the subject of manhunt by K9 units in the area of 200th Sreet as the suspect is being actively searched for by K9 units.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area and residents were asked to stay inside their homes.
"His bravery is echoed across Washington every day, as our law enforcement officers run towards the danger in service of making Washington a safer place", Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement. Trudi and I are saddened and praying for the deputy's young family as they grieve the loss of their husband and father.
