Trump Tower includes the eponymous family's pre-presidential residence, along with a handful of shops, restaurants and offices. It took about an hour to extinguish the blaze at the high-rise building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. "The men and women of the #FDNY are true heroes and deserve our most honest thanks and praise!"

"We made several announcements to all the tenants in the building to remain in place", said New York Fire Chief Roger Sakowich.

About 84 firefighters were at the scene initially. There have been no injuries or evacuations, and the President is not now at Trump Tower.

Cameras on the top of Rockefeller Center, about seven blocks away, showed firefighters crowding around on the top of the building as smoke emitted from one corner of the roof about 7:30 a.m.

Two civilians and a firefighter were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the department said.

Twitter user, Susan D. Ball, captured an image of a large amount of smoke emanating from Trump Tower and clouding the air. The person is filming from a street-level view and added a caption to his view written in red that said, "Trump Tower is on fire!"

The 68-story Manhattan high rise houses its namesake developer-turned-president in a penthouse condominium, though President Trump was in Washington at the time of the fire, according to his White House schedule. A 1984 New York Magazine article described how the peach-tone marble amplifies the "gurgling of a dramatic 80ft waterfall as well as the voices of those who've come to gawk at the opulent decor and the six floors of expensive shops".
