Well, this is certainly a shock: Jeff Passan hears from a source that there is no deal in place for Gerrit Cole and that all of this was a "false rumor". Keuchel, of course, becomes a free agent after the 2018 season, so Cole's presence will help cushion the blow of him leaving after the season, assuming he leaves.

The Astros have acquired the top-end starter team owner Jim Crane wanted.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded pitcher Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros, according to reports.

Cole's wife, Amy, summed up the day by posting video of a roller-coaster ride on Twitter.

Right now the Yankees have Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery in their rotation. Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb could be a more realistic target.

The Pirates drafted Cole in 2011, using their first overall selection to do so.

Cole, 27, finished fourth in the 2015 National League Cy Young Award voting, but he posted the highest ERA (4.26) of his major league career last season, going 12-12 in 33 starts. He struck out 103 while allowing only two home runs in 90 innings against the Cubs.
