Giants can zero in on Kevin Stefanski after Vikings hire John DeFilippo

The Vikings denied the Giants' request to interview QBs coach Kevin Stefanski for their offensive coordinator vacancy. Well, Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley is a hot name at the moment, and he and Shurmur overlapped when Staley was a Philly running back and Shurmur was coaching tight ends, offensive line and eventually quarterbacks for Andy Reid.

They might have been ready, but the Vikings weren't about the let that happen.

Shurmur does have most of his staff together with the Giants. Either he will be promoted to that role with the Minnesota Vikings or he will join Pat Shurmur and will that role with the New York Giants. But he'll have to stick as Minnesota's quarterbacks coach for another year while the Giants will have to go to Plan B at offensive coordinator. Instead, Stefanski, who has been with the organization since Brad Childress brought him in 12 years ago, would, presumably, be looking for a new job as an offensive coordinator in New York-a promotion with more responsibility and likely more money-and another leg up the ladder to a head coaching job.

Shurmur said on January 18 at the Vikings' Winter Park facility, when the Daily News traveled north to speak with the Giants' next head coach, that Stefanski has been "very patient with his career".

Former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is a candidate to watch now that the Indianapolis Colts have officially hired Frank Reich to be their head coach. "He's done an incredible job this year". Minnesota's offense finished last season ranked 10th in the National Football League with 23.9 points per game.

The Eagles will reportedly promote assistant quarterbacks coach Press Taylor to quarterbacks coach as DeFilippo's successor. They could block the Giants' interest even without that scenario unfolding, given the two teams' status as division rivals.

Before joining the Eagles' coaching staff two years ago, DeFilippo served as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders from 2012-14 and offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2015.

Ryan spent nines seasons with the Giants, serving as a wide receivers and quarterbacks coach. Foles was named Super Bowl MVP for his performance against the Patriots.

Heading into the playoffs, Keenum has nothing but praise for the Shurmur/Stefanski duo.
