At least 14 people were injured, three seriously, after a major fire broke out in an explosion inside a boiler at a chemicals company in Boisar-Tarapur industrial estate in Palghar district late on Thursday night.
"We fear there may be more casualties". It is probing the cause of the fire and has filed an accidental death report, said sources.
The blast, prima facie is suspected to have occurred in a boiler room and efforts were on to douse the fire in the factory precincts. The deceased were identified as Pintu Kumar Gautam, Janu Adaria and Alok Nath, all from Arti industries, said SP Palghar. The injured have been admitted to hospitals, Shinge said. Reports state that a total of six chemical factories were affected by the fire.

The flames also engulfed Bharat Rasayan, Aarti Drugs, Unimax Chemicals and Prachi Pharmaceuticals, which share a wall with Novaphene. "If the units are found guilty, a recommendation will be made to the government to cancel their licences", he said.

Those who were present at the scene said: the blasts were "sounding like a huge bomb".
The collector added that aid was asked for controlling the fire from Vasai-Virar Municipal corporation, Tarapur Atomic Plant and Reliance thermal power station. As of Friday morning police, fire, revenue and health personnel were on the spot and carrying out search & rescue operations. There are around 1,100 chemical plants and additional 400-500 other factories in MIDC Tarapur.
