Microsoft says Sony is purposefully holding back 'Fornite' cross-play

Gears of War 4 Crossplay

The Coalition enabled Xbox One-PC crossplay for Gears of War 4 in 2017

This mode will support cross-play and cross progression (meaning your character remains constant on all supported platforms) between iOS, PlayStation 4, PC and Mac, with Android support coming at a later date. Today we're getting our first glimpse of how Fortnite will play on mobile devices, thanks to a new trailer from Epic Games.

Sony hasn't commented on the move, and it's unclear whether there's more to the lack of cross-play than what Microsoft says. "We've worked closely with Nintendo to allow cross-network play between Xbox One and Switch and our offer to do the same with PlayStation players still holds", a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Kotaku. To the tweet, Spencer replied "Me 2".

"Microsoft has always been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles", a Microsoft representative told Kotaku in an email. At the time, Sony dodged the cross-play question saying that it was to protect kids by not exposing them to the "external influences we have no ability to manage or look after".

The latest edition of Sony blocking crossplay is with Fortnite Battle Royale. Most of this should be pretty common knowledge for those who are savvy to all these online scams, but with how diverse and ravenous the Fortnite following has become, it's not hard to imagine that players would jump at any chance they could to get a special invite or score some free V-Bucks. It will be interesting to see if/how exploits like rocket riding will work on mobile devices, if at all.

PS4 and Xbox One users won't be able to use Fortnite's cross-play features against one another.

Epic promised that Fortnite on mobile would be the full experience, and from what little we can glean, that appears to be the case.

For the Fortnite, Microsoft requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live Gold in order to play. Further, they assured that everything would be the same from gameplay to content and weekly updates.

Signups for beta events for the mobile version of Fortnite will be made available on from Monday, March 12.
