Since then, T'Challa and crew have broken down a slew of other barriers including Fandango's presale ticket record.

The Marvel adaptation, which was directed by Ryan Coogler and bowed last month, wrested this title from Joss Whedon's 2012 The Avengers.

With this result, "Black Panther" also passed the domestic total of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", which made $619 million this past winter.

Black Panther's box office success is all the more noteworthy in the context of the Marvel blockbuster it is poised to unseat. "Black Panther" took in $27 million in weekend ticket sales, pushing its domestic gross to $605.4 million, and its worldwide haul to about $1.2 billion.

This position is not adjusted for inflation, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which also announced that Black Panther is the sixth highest-grossing movie of any kind domestically.

Internationally, Black Panther is still in fourth place among superhero flicks. Deadline lists the movie as taking in a whopping $630.9 million. By the end of Sunday, the film is expected to out-earn "Iron Man 3", which grossed $1.214 billion worldwide.

The superhero film from Walt Disney Co.'s DIS, Marvel Studios topped the domestic box office for a fifth straight week, becoming the first movie to do so since "Avatar" in 2009.

Marvel's latest release has received acclaim across the board. That wave alone should carry Infinity War to a massive box office. Word of mouth, critical praise, and all-star performances from the likes of Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, and Letitia Wright continued to boost the film's presence in theaters.
