Chromebook tablets take iPad fight to the classroom

Acer unveils the Chromebook Tab 10 for $329, the first Chrome OS tablet

Chrome OS Tablets are Officially Here!

And guess what? Acer, who makes the tablet, says it's "designed for education and promotes engagement and collaboration between students and teachers". Hmm. The first Chromebook tablet, the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, will be made available later this year.

According to DroidLife, the product will not be restricted for sale in the education space - mass market consumers will be able to purchase the new device.

In Australia, Acer has risen to market leadership for its supply in the education industry.

Acer's Chromebook Tab 10 is a fairly run-of-the-mill tablet in that it sports a 9.7in display with a sharp resolution of 2,048 x 1,535 that's akin to the latest iPad. Despite occasional success with Android tablets, Google's last Android tablet was the Pixel C, launched nearly three years ago in September 2015.

When it comes to pricing, you will be surprised the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 is only $329.

Either Apple knew that the first Chrome OS tablet for education is coming this week, or Google did time the release to coincide with Apple's event.

Acer launched Chromebook Tab 10 on Monday to take on Apple's upcoming iPad which the company is expected to launch at company's education based event scheduled for today. The Chromebook Tab 10 is powered by an OP1 processor which is further paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

"The Acer Chromebook Tab 10 combines advances in hardware and application support to enable more meaningful learning for an even wider range of students", wrote James Lin, GM of Commercial & Detachable Notebooks at Acer, in an email to HEXUS.

Goggle's ChromeOS will be familiar with many educational establishments thanks to the popularity of ChromeBook laptops in the sector. The stylus is also lodged within the body when not in use, and doesn't need to be charged. In terms of connectivity, the Chromebook Tab 10 comes with several options like - Wi-Fi, USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Bluetooth v4.1.

The main camera on the device's rear is positioned in the top right corner and it a 5MP one. But even if it's priced below Acer's new device (and the other Chrome tablets that will surely follow), it's unlikely that the Apple version will be as affordable after adding a keyboard case and stylus.
