A gas leak suspected of killing an American family in Mexico is believed to have come from the boiler in their vacation rental, a Mexican official said Monday.

The family - Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41, Amy Marie Sharp, 38, Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Maria Sharp, 7 - were visiting Mexico on vacation when family members got anxious. By the time they were discovered, the family appeared to have been dead for 36 to 48 hours, the state attorney general's office in Quintana Roo said.

It wouldn't be the first time that faulty gas connections killed tourists in the area.

"Everything they did, they did as a family", Harris said. According to CBS Des Moines affiliate KCCI, reports that according to family members' social media posts, Kevin, 41, Amy, 38, Sterling, 12, and Adrianna Sharp, 7, were expected to arrive in St. Louis on Wednesday to attend a basketball game in Danville, Illinois. Creston police contacted the U.S. State Department, and the bodies were found during a welfare check at the condo in Tulum, on the Yucatan Peninsula. Weighing the possibility of a delayed or cancelled flight, the Sharps' extended family waited until Thursday to notify authorities that they hadn't heard from them.

Miguel Angel Pech told a Radio Formula station that "a high level" of gas was found in the rented condo where the Creston couple and their two kids were staying.

"Life is not going to be the same without her", Beth Fry, Amy Sharp's mother, said Friday, according to the Associated Press. One family member said she felt like "she lost half her family". It pinged in Mexico, Hoyt told the Creston News Advertiser.

On Saturday, the community held a candlelight vigil at Adams County Speedway, where the Sharp family were regular spectators, local NBC affiliate World Health Organization reported.

"Creston is close-knit like all small towns in Iowa", Baldwin added.

Besides working in beer distribution, Kevin Sharp was a race auto driver at southwestern Iowa's Adams County Speedway, where he finished fourth in last year's stock vehicle series standings.

The gas that killed the family hasn't yet been determined but firefighters have launched an investigation.
