Gannon and Nero were shot Thursday as the officer attempted to serve a warrant in the Marstons Mills village of Barnstable. Dennis Veterinary Hospital posted on Facebook that Nero was shot in the face and neck but has been stabilized and faces surgery Friday.

"The men and women of the Yarmouth Police Department are proud to report that our beloved K-9 Nero is back on his feet - Fighting back and standing strong", the department wrote. Authorities said Latanowich fatally shot Gannon in the head as the officer chased him into the attic of his home.

"Those kinds of questions are appropriately asked and examined whenever there is a tragedy like this, and we will review those things", O'Keefe said. He called Gannon a "remarkable young man".
