Atletico Madrid are seemingly making a huge effort to keep star forward Antoine Griezmann out of the clutches of La Liga rivals Barcelona, after it was reported the club are preparing a bumper new contract for the French global.
ABC recently reported that Griezmann was ready to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano despite Barcelona's interest (h/t Jorge Garcia of AS).
Griezmann would be able to fill a number of different roles for Barcelona, as he's operated at the point of the attack, as a support striker and occasionally in advanced wide positions for Atletico.
"He's a great player and we would understand each other", Messi explained to Mundo Deportivo.
"Playing for Atletico Madrid would be better for him because his team-mates are looking for him constantly, if he goes to Barcelona, players look first for Messi".More news: Thousands could be spared chemotherapy after landmark breast cancer study
"He's going through an exceptional moment in his career".
Would you like to see Griezmann at Barca next season? We want to be the best team in the world, and to do that we want the best players.
Messi, who has previously said he would welcome Griezmann at the Camp Nou, has again insisted the 27-year-old is one of the best in the business and that he would suit the Catalans.
Griezmann and Messi are both now preparing for the World Cup with their respective national sides, with France set to face the United States in their final warm-up friendly in Lyon on Saturday evening and Argentina having cancelled a proposed fixture against Israel in Jerusalem amid political pressure.
