Kadyrov declared Salah to be an honorary citizen of Chechnya in a ceremony with the player.

The match in Volgograd came one day after Salah apparently told Egyptian team officials and teammates that he may retire from worldwide play in protest against being used as a political symbol while the World Cup squad was based in Grozny, the capital of the mostly Muslim region of Chechnya.

Before the tournament began, Salah was pictured alongside Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, at Egypt's base in Grozny.

In an email sent to CNN, the Egyptian Football Federation said it was surprised that Salah was ready to "quit the national team" and that the 26-year-old hadn't informed them of that intention.

Mohamed Salah put aside his highly publicized troubles to score another World Cup goal. "That's right! I gave Mohamed Salah a copy of the order and a pin at a celebratory dinner that I gave in honour of the Egyptian team", wrote Kadyrov in a social media post.

So much so, that he now seems to be reassessing his future with the Egyptian national team.

But in the fifth minute of second-half injury-time, Al-Dawsari popped up in the box to beat El Hadary with the last kick of the match and secure a famous Saudi win.

The Pharaohs went out of the tournament with a whimper as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia, meaning they leave Russian Federation without a point from their three group games.

"We want to apologise to all the Egyptian fans, who came to support us here in the three matches", he said after the match, according to beIN SPORTS.

Salah will return to Anfield shortly, ahead of Liverpool's pre-season tour of America next month.

Egypt's final World Cup game is against Saudi Arabia on Monday.
