Belgium's Adnan Januzaj celebrates after a goal in a match against England during the 2018 Fifa World Cup

Belgium beat England to top spot with Januzaj strike

James Rodriguez, who has been dealing with a calf strain throughout the tournament, was subbed out in the 31st minute of Colombia's last match against Senegal.

Belgium created the better openings in a poor first half while England showed greater urgency but a lack of finesse in the final third where they missed tournament top scorer Kane and the movement of Jesse Lingard, who both watched from the bench.

So will Gareth Southgate's changes against Belgium prove to be a masterstroke, or will they came back to haunt him? However, this young side has nothing to fear and will be looking to relay the ghosts of England teams past.

"It is 10 years since we have won a knockout fixture", said the England head coach at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

Defenders: Cristian Zapata (AC Milan), Oscar Murillo (CF Pachuca), Santiago Arias (PSV Eindhoven), Yerry Mina (Barcelona), Johan Mojica (Girona FC), Frank Fabra (CA Boca Juniors), and Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham Hotspur). David Ospina will play a grander role in calming the defensive line and ensuring they keep their shape and cool on the pitch.

The second half was as ill-tempered and chippy as the first, and so it was no real surprise the first goal came from the penalty spot, Harry Kane converting after he had been dragged to ground in the box by Sanchez.

The result means Belgium, who won all three of their group games to finish on nine points, will face Japan in the last 16. "If I'm on the pitch, I want to take one". How fucking dare they try and stop football coming home.

Colombia and England have played each other only once competitively, in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup.

For England fans of a certain age, the defining memory of Colombia is a 0-0 friendly draw in 1995, unremarkable but for Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita's acrobatic "scorpion kick" save - a front flip to kick the ball away with his heels while horizontal in the air.
