The new orders expand the area under mandatory evacuation to west of Lucerne at Bartlett Springs Road and Highway CA-20, south of the fire, east of the fire, north of Clear Lake including the communities of Blue Lakes, Upper Lake, Nice, Lakeport, WitterSprings, Bachelor Valley, Scotts Valley, Saratoga Springs.

Officials said Wednesday that the Carr Fire was the sixth most destructive wildfire in California history.

Another CalFire spokesman said roughly 40,000 people were under evacuation orders statewide, many from a pair of fires burning close together at the southern end of the Mendocino National Forest.

Now, the Carr blaze has spread to a total of 196.6 square miles in California, where firefighters are still diligently battling it.

Meanwhile, 32,000 residents are still evacuated from the fires and more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed.

Most of the devastation occurred on the night of July 26, when gale-force winds whipped the blaze into a flaming cyclone that jumped the Sacramento River and roared with little warning into Redding and adjacent towns in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region.

Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders because of the fire, which has killed six people, including two firefighters, and leveled almost 500 buildings, according to officials.
