Ohio State University put coach Urban Meyer on leave on Wednesday while it investigates allegations the football coach knew about a 2015 domestic violence incident involving a former assistant years before the assistant was sacked last week. Zach Smith's ex-wife accuses him of abusing her for years, most recently in 2015.
Meyer said he was aware of an incident involving Zach and Courtney Smith in 2009, while they were still married.
Zach Smith was sacked last week after an OH court granted a domestic violence protective order to Courtney Smith.
Meyer ended up as the Ohio State coach because of a previous football scandal. Meyer acknowledges he knew about a 2009 incident when he hired Smith but says he didn't hear of the latest allegation until last week.
She continued, "When somebody is crying out for help, I believe, the coach along with the coach's wife have a duty".More news: Trump claims Americans need to show photo IDs to buy groceries
Buckeyes alumni weren't all supportive of Meyer, however. "I eagerly look forward to the resolution of this matter", Meyer said.
Ohio State co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day will serve as acting head coach in Meyer's absence. He was Ohio State's wide receivers coach until his firing last week.
After Courtney Smith drove the woman home, a fight with her husband ensued and he allegedly grabbed her by the shirt and threw her. Zach Smith was arrested for aggravated battery. Zach Smith was charged with criminal trespassing and a protection order was filed.
She also told the sports network Stadium that she sent photos to Meyer's wife, Shelley.
"I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there", Meyer said. "I was never told about anything ... never had a conversation about it, so I know nothing about that". "I don't know. Someone texted me that last night". I told people to go find out for me.
